1. Professional Development Opportunities.  An active professional development committee provides numerous opportunities for professional growth and continuing education for architects at all stages of their careers.  Special programs are available to interns, technical gurus, management and professional liability personnel and architects in general.  Additionally a committee representative is at the event to record your attendance for credit toward your Learning Unit requirements.

  2. Member meetings, lectures, programs and events.  The Chapter holds several special events throughout the year including lectures, social events, legislative up-dates and general member meetings.  The committee not only brings in noted speakers from around the country, but also arranges tours of the new buildings in the area.  All are welcome to come and bring guests.

  3. Design Awards competition, presentation event and gallery exhibit.  Fall brings the excitement of our Design Awards presentation and lecture which is the gala affair of the year.  In addition to the festivities of the evening, the winning entries are on exhibit throughout Pittsburgh for a month following their submissions.  This event and the winning projects are well covered in the local print media throughout the month.

  4. Subscription to ColumnsAIA Pittsburgh members enjoy the Chapter magazine Columns delivered to them ten times a year.  Not only does it include news of the industry, schedule of upcoming events and information on the activities of members and firms, its professional editorial staff investigates issues of importance to the industry at large and writes insightful articles to advise and inform the membership.  It is the only publication of its kind in the Western Pennsylvania area.

  5. Members featured in Columns articles and news. The work of members and member firms is given preference in Columns, and views on issues are solicited from AIA architects and the Chapter Professional Affiliates.  Columns is not only distributed to Chapter members but to all registered architects, AIA members in 35 counties in Western and Central PA, and to the construction and built environment community as well. In addition members in ASLA, ASID, and professional affiliates enjoy receiving Columns.  Over 3,000 copies of each issue are freely distributed featuring articles about you and your professional association and affiliates.

  6. Marketing of member firms through advertising and the Internet.  Potential clients who are seeking architectural services through the Yellow Pages or in response to the AIA National ad campaign are sent, free of charge, a package of information, or they are directed to AIA Pittsburgh's web site at www.aiapgh.org/ to assist them in making a wise choice of the services they need.  Included on the web site is the AIA Pittsburgh Directory listing all member firms.  This service has directed much business toward AIA architects.

  7. General promotion of architecture/architects through community involvement and awareness programs.  The Chapter works constantly and openly to promote architects as problem solvers and to secure seats on decision and policy making boards.  Demonstrated series and forums known as design charrettes have further promoted architects in planning environments.  Currently architects sit on the Southwest Pennsylvania Regional Planning Commission and the Downtown Plan Advisory Board as well as many neighborhood and municipal planning commissions and boards.  AIA Pittsburgh will continue to promote architects through increased public awareness of their talents and expertise and ability.  Moreover, AIA Pittsburgh acts as a local resource for any architecturally related question, often calling upon its members to fill speaking opportunities or to provide specific expertise to the local media.

  8. *Opportunity to place portfolio in Resource Center.  The Resource Center is open to the public and contains portfolios of participating member firms.  The portfolios are designed by the firms and contain photographs of past projects, a statement of the firm's philosophy, business cards, brochures or whatever the firm desires.  Potential clients are invited to use the Resource Center and many architects report receiving commissions as a result.

This directory offers architects and consumers the ability to search by firm name or by a specific type of architecture. It also offers photographs' of works by firms and a direct link to a firms' web site or e-mail.
